about

David Gray is passionate about curlews, and a patron of the UK charity, Curlew Action, which aims to protect curlews, while promoting natural history education and wider engagement with the natural world. For ‘The Arc’, David draws upon the ‘dual quality’ of the curlew’s call:

“The curlew’s song seems to split in mid air and take the heart in two directions at once. I tried to fashion my song in the gap in between. I realised that every time I encounter the curlew’s music, it seems not only comfortingly familiar but also strange and alien. The words in my song suggest time moving in a circle, within which the curlew’s voice acts as a gateway - a curving beam which, as it rises, carries us inward into a world of memory and transcendence, and then beyond that, into a place of obscurity and ‘deep time’.” – David Gray

Composed by David Gray
Performed by David Gray (piano, vocals, guitars), Colm Mac Con Iomaire (violin)
Programming and mixing by Ben De Vries

Lyrics

The arc of sound
Hits the prism of the human heart
Unspools a yearning
And my feet are on that circular path
And I’m returning
Yeah I’m returning on back
To the place I’ve never been
Eyes like two headlights in the fog
The slate wiped clean
Like a beast it sounds
Through the chasm of the beating heart
And now I’m burning
Like green wood upon the fire
In my returning
Heading out upon this ghost of a road
Beyond the reach of desire
Birth pangs of the new moon
I hope this spell don’t break too soon
Last bones of the old moon
Well I hope that I don’t wake too soon
Dream-scrolling back through the years
Laid out like rings on a tree
Feet are feeling for the path
The circle turning me
Returning me back to the place I’ve never been
The arc of sound
Hits the prism of the human heart, yeah and it splits
And I see you standing there inside of its
Dark/Bright rainbow
Yeah you’re standing there inside of its
Dark/Bright rainbow
Feet are feeling for the path
The slate wiped clean
One moment wintry and grey
Next moment bountiful and green
Wintry and grey
Bountiful and green
